Polydactylism in cats is caused by a dominant gene and can be inherited by offspring. Polydactyly gave Maine coons larger, wider paws with more insulation to traverse the snowy conditions.

Can a Maine Coon handle the cold?
Yes, Maine Coon cats are well-adapted to colder climates due to their thick, water-resistant fur, and they can tolerate cooler temperatures better than many other breeds. However, no cat should be left outside in temperatures below 45°F for extended periods. Maine Coons have a long, dense double coat which provides excellent insulation, making them comfortable in colder environments.
